Thank you!
...to Jack for participating in Evansdale's Science Night. He presented his project on insulation! Excellent job! I am sorry I did not have this event on my radar--I would have encouraged my students to participate. ...To Luke and his family for sharing an electric pencil sharpener with our class--the 2nd one they have given us! ...To Emily, her family, and her neighbor who tried to fix our old pencil sharpener. Thank for you ordering us a new one on behalf of the class. ...To the Cultural Arts committee for bringing musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to share their love love of music with our students. ...To all parents who are working with their children at home to master the multiplication facts! ...To my students who work hard every day! ...to all the students and their families who have and will be taking care of Bella and Muffy on the weekends and holidays! This is what we are up to this week... In math we will work on the concepts of perimeter and area. For extra practice go to the following link... http://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/basic-geometry/perimeter_area_tutorial/v/perimeter-and-area-basics In science we will review the regions of Georgia and the habitats found in our state (Chapter 7). I sent home the next science project expectations last week. The projects are due on February 20. We have a few classroom needs...hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. We will need tissue soon. This is what we are up to this week... In math we will be exploring area and perimeter. Some students will continue to take timed multiplication drills and complete the practice log until all facts are mastered. We have been working on multiplication since October--it is imperative that all third graders know the facts! In science we will finish up Chapter 6 on plant and animal adaptations. I will give a test on Friday. I am sending home the next science project which is due in a month, on February 20.
Many students are not completing and turning in math homework. This is unexceptable! Please make a habit of checking your child's planner every night. Also, please check the behavior section at the front. This is one way we communicate with you. I will try to initial each student's planner daily, although this takes a lot of time away from instruction.
Also many students are not prepared for class. Some do not have the basics, such as pencils and crayons. Please make sure your child has pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, a dry erase marker, and a small pencil sharpener. In the past I have provided community supplies for those who occasionally needed them. But within a short amount of time these supplies were used, taken, or lost. I no long provide supplies. We do not have a working pencil sharpener in our classroom. Many students do not respect the things that have been provided for them. We can do better! Here's what we are up to this week:
In Math we will be finishing up our unit on multiplication and division. We will be focusing on the 9's table--a very fun one! I will continue to give timed drills each day. Some students have mastered all the facts and are exempt from the multiplication practice log homework assignment. For everyone else...part of this week's homework is to complete the practice log and turn it in on Friday for a homework grade. I sent the log and directions home in courier. In science we learned about adaptations that plants have to reproduce, grow, and survive. This week we will be exploring animal adaptations (Chapter 6, Lesson 2). Reminders... Students can come to the classroom as early as 7:30. Although the official start of the day is 8:00, my homeroom students will be expected to work on Accelerated Math assignments, Math Facts in a Flash, or AR. New protocols are in place to keep our children safe. Please enter the building from the front door only and always sign in. We are not allowed to open the side doors for anyone. You may not check out your child from the classroom. Please go to the office and your child will be cal Please have your child sharpen at least 3 pencils in preparation for each school day. This really helps us stay focused! Thanks for your continued support! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with your familiy and friends! I know I did. Now I am refreshed and ready to tackle Second Semester.
This is what we are up to this week... In math we will be exploring and learning the 8's multiplication table and the related division facts. I will give a test on 8's on Friday. This test will not be timed. I will continue to give timed drills on the multiplication tables. Students will be required to complete and turn in a daily practice log. It is imperative that all students master the multiplication facts because later this month we will be moving on to new standards. In science we will be starting our study of the Habitats of Georgia (Chapters 6 and 7 in our text). This is a really fun unit! I will be assigning one project--details coming soon. First Semester Honors Day is this Thursday. Look for more information to come home on Tuesday. New morning routines...students will be dismissed to classrooms at 7:30 instead of 7:40. In my homeroom, students will use this time to prepare for the day, listen to announcements and work on Accelereated Math assignments. Students are counted tardy at 800, but I want to take advantage of this time. More changes to our morning routines will be outlined by Dr. McGuire. These changes are being implemented for the safety and protection of our students. |
