Don't forget...Evansdale's Black History program is this Thursday!  Several of my students are in the production.  Come to learn and to support these students and Mrs. Pitts who have worked so hard.

I forgot to include these links on fractions--a fun way to practice and preview.

Benchmark Week

2/24/2013

This is what we are up to this week...

In math we will continue to explore fractions.  Your child will learn that we can use fractions in three main ways--when we measure things, and when we talk about parts of groups or parts of things.  Discuss fractions when you cut that pizza or cake or batch of brownies.  Share how you use a ruler to measure or a measuring cup when you prepare dinner.  FYI--we will be measuring to the nearest half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth of an inch.

In science students will continue to share their projects.  We are learning so much from each other.  We will also try to begin a group project in class that summarizes what we have learned about habitats of Georgia, our animals, and our plants.

Students will be taking DeKalb County benchmark tests in all subjects areas this week.  The tests are administered in the computer lab.

We had another scientist from Fernbank spend the day with 3rd grade.  He shared his love of rocks and minerals with us.  Students got a great introduction to our next focus in science.  They learned about the minerals and rocks of Georgia and worked in groups to identify some samples.  My homeroom class got quite a compliment...he said he was impressed with their focus and participation!

Thanks for sending in disinfectant wipes and tissue.  I think we may have enough tissue, but still are in need of hand sanitizer and wipes.

Here are a few photos from our week...

Thanks to all the parents who contributed to the Valentine's Day party--those who sent in goodies and those who hosted.  "That was the best party every!" was a comment I overheard more than once.

We have another busy week ahead...
*Box Tops are due on Tuesday
*Science projects are due on Wednesday
*Conference Afternoon is this Thursday--look for a sign-up form to come home on Tuesday
*Spirt Night is on Thursday

This is what we are up to in the classroom...

In math we will finish up our exploration of quadrilaterals and begin our study of fractions, another major set of standards for 3rd graders.  I will also continue to give timed multiplication drills to those students who continue to plug away at those facts.  I will give all students multiplication and division fact drills for practice and reinforcement.

In science we will learn from each other as students present their projects on habitats and animals of Georgia.

Thanks to those who have sent in classroom supplies to keep us all healthy.  We are still in need of hand sanitizer.

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful long weekend!  I know I did!

In math we have been working with quadrilaterals.  Go to this website and do a Quadrilateral Quest!  It is harder than it looks.  Let me know how you did.

What a fantastic Mardi Gras parade!  Merci, Madame Lewis!

I forgot to add this to my last entry...please have your child bring in a shoebox (or other small box) tomorrow.  Guess what we will be doing?

Wow--we had such a fun week.  On Friday we participated in a cultural arts program featuring African dance.  Everyone enjoyed the dancers and drummers!  We also had a visiting scientest from Fernbank teach us about venomous snakes of Georgia--fun stuff!  Photos and video coming soon!)

This is what we are up to this week:

In math we will continue to work with quadrilaterals.  We will also review bar graphs and line plots.  Then we will get a taste of fractions!  If your child has not mastered all multiplication facts, please continue to have her/him study each day and turn in a practice log on Friday.  I will send home a practice log on Tuesday, or you can download one from this site.

In science we will be learning about the different habitats of Georgia.  Students will be working on a major notebook activity.  In addition, at home you child should have already started on the habitats of Georgia project which is due on February 20.  The descripition and a grading rubric were sent home a couple of weeks ago.

Mrs. McCloud, our assistant principal, has talked to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders about their behavior in the hallway and cafeteria.  Ask your child about this--it is a biggie!  We do expect all students to abide by the rules of the school and classroom.

We are still in need of disinfectant wipes and tissue.  Thanks so much for those who have made donations already!

I hope you enjoy the week, especially Valentine's Day!  And remember that there is no school next Monday, Presidents' Day.

Sunshine!  What a beautiful thing!!

A big congratulations to all my students who participated in the Sagamore Math Tournament!  I am so proud of you!  It was very exciting to see so many students spending their Saturday morning doing math!  And congratulations to the Math Club members who worked hard all year to prepare and qualify for the team event.  Evansdale's two teams worked with great intensity on some really challenging questions! Way to go!!

This is what we are up to this week...

In math we will be "playing" with different geometric shapes.  Students will find similarities and differences and begin to develop an understanding of properties of groups of shapes.  I will post some useful interactive websites.

In science we will learn about different ecosystems in our state and the plants and animals that live there.  Your child should be starting her/his project.  The following websites are good places to begin...

Reminders:

We still are in need of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.  We are trying sooo hard to stay healthy!

Please check your child's planner for notes on behavior and for homework assignments.

Many students still need to master the multiplication facts.  I will continue to give them timed fact drills every day.  They are expected to completed the practice log as a graded homework assignment which is due on Fridays.
