I'm sorry I missed Fantastic Friday--I heard it was really fun! Thanks to all of you who volunteered! And thanks so much for putting our room back together! Also--Thanks to Briarlake Baptist Church for all their hard work on Saturday!! I hope you all enjoyed the weekend!
This is what we are up to this week... ITBS resumes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Language Arts Spelling--October words (There will be homework this week, but just a tad.) Comprehension skill--fact and opinion Grammar--common and proper nouns Story--Aero and Officer Mike *Don't forget about the reading calendar is due at the end of the month. Math--the meaning of multiplication (with manipulatives) Science--continue Lesson 2 on Pollution ***What was I thinking?!? The projects will be due on November 4, not November 1, the day after Halloween! Social Studies--students will organize their notebooks to reflect the 7 Themes of SS. We will review the people and events we have studied so far to place them in the correct themes. Thanks for sending your child to school everyday ready and excited to learn! Nine-Week progress reports will come home today. Please ask your child for it. Please sign and return the envelope. You may keep the progress report.
Don't forget about Pajama Jam which will be held on Friday...such a fun charity fundraiser! Testing is going well. My students are real troupers! Remember that make up days are built into the testing schedule, so don't worry if your child is sick and needs to stay at home. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend! Yep--it's another testing week. This week your child will take the ITBS, Iowa Test of Basic Skills, an achievement test. There is no way to prepare for the test other than get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast.
In addition to testing we will be learning about Frederick Douglass, work on editing our robot stories, and complete Lesson 2 on Pollution and Conservation. We will also begin our big unit on multiplication and division. In Friday's courier, I sent home information about the science projects which are due on or before November 1. Your child was asked to get your input on choosing the two projects. My suggestion is to choose one that is art related and one that is research related--a creative one and a fact-finding one. I have included the rubric I will use to evaluate the projects. An amount of money was found in our classroom last week. If you or your child are missing some money, please get in contact with me. If the money is not claimed, I will give it to Eagle Trek on Wednesday.
Also, a set of keys has been in our classroom for a while. It looks like a door key and a mailbox key. It is on a square Floriday keychain. Yep...it's testing week. I will be administering the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. There is no way to prepare for this test except to come to school rested and ready to work. Because of the testing, there will be no homework except to read each night.
This is what we are up to this week... We will be finishing up our language arts lesson from last week. Students will also work on their writing..."stretching" their paragraphs by adding more details and interesting words such as adjectives. In math we will finish up graphs, not just creating them but analyzing them and drawing conclusions from them. This has been a challenge for some students. Students will continue to work on Accelerated Math assignments, Math Facts in a Flash, and First in Math. In science we will begin our unit on pollution and conservation. I allowed students to earn back points on the social studies test by locating the correct answers in their Social Studies Weekly newspapers. This seemed to be a good learning experience. Eagle Trek was so much fun! A big thank you to all who came to cheer us on! |
